Starter, altenator, battery, ground, or short?

Postby jagojay on Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:43 pm

Well I fixed my clutch problem (upside down banjo) and a newone arose, my cars been starting fine since I bought it and from the looks of it the starter is new and the battery is a year old. However for some reason when I tried to start it it would just turn over, it's getting gas, and sparking just fine so I tried again, eventually the cars interior lights started dimming and it starting turning over slowly, until now when I try the starter clicks and the interior lights shut off.... Jumperbcables from my truck to the car doesn't effect it and according to the volt meter the battery is pushing 14-15v. I'm really not sure what to look for or where for this problem.

Any advise to get this car starting again would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

ps: sorry for any typos, currently using my phone

Solved, needed to charge the battery, ran it down from trying to start it, original problem remains

So how did you get it started? I now have the same problem. Drove home fine, parked, tried to tighten upper motor mount (apparently former owner properly installed zero (0) bolts to the upper mount - the one with the dogbone). Next morning fuel pump ran, starter cranked fine, fuel pump ran again after cranking, but not one explosion in any cylinder.

Two days later I found that I had in fact disconnected something while trying to fix the motor mount, but reconnecting it didn't change anything. It was the vacuum tubes connecting to the EGR solenoid, one tube was completely disconnected, the other was loose. Car still cranks just fine, fuel pump runs, but no other signs of life.

I haven't yet checked for spark, codes, or blown fuses. The temperature has fallen from the forties when it last ran down to the single digits until today, when I had to work. I have checked for a loose coil wire and any other electrical connection, including where I was working, but haven't found anything unusual.

I do have all the parts for the ignition system from the distributor o-ring through spark plugs (the only part already installed) including new coil and both coil connectors, and all the distributor parts like the pickup coil, module, new screws, and dielectic grease. I even have reflective paint for the distributor and coil heat shields and a small fan to use as a coil blower when it gets warm again. The only thing I lack is the desire to attempt this project outside in a parking lot in the dead of winter when it gets dark at 4:30 in the afternoon.

I've seen other posts where Fiero owners had similar problems which got no better after a major investment in tuneup parts. Eventually they traced the problem to a loose wire. Is that what happened to you?

I'd first check for spark. Second pull the module and run it up to autozone to have it tested 5 or 6 times. If the module is good get a pickup coil. Mine had a locating pin that was grounding out the coil from time to time.
While there also pick up a new O ring for the dizzy.

It's warm and sunny today, so I hooked up a booster battery, looked again for anything loose. Then I turned the key and it started right up. It was snowing wet snow last time I worked on it before it wouldn't start. Probably just got something wet. Minimize.
